We are surrounded with data in many forms and shapes. It's one of the data management professional's roles to capture and govern new sources of data, or augment existing data.

There are three main way that data is captured:

1. Data Acquisition - gathering of the data already generated internally (i.e. Accounting Systems), or externally (i.e. Market Data suppliers)

2. Data Entry - creating new data values or augmenting existing data sets by human operators 

3. Signal Reception - gathering of signals from machines or through Internet of Things (IoT)

As we capture and collect new data sets we need to update our metadata repository with linage and usage of the new data.
